I added a “what I’m up to” page to my website over at weirdlysacred.com/now. It’s inspired by the nownownow movement which you can learn about at nownownow.com/about. I’ll be updating my page in a few days with all my latest shenanigannery, so I thought I’d capture October’s entry here on my blog.
Current Location 📍 Lawrence, Kansas, USA 🏡 The leaves are starting to change.
📖 On my nightstand
The Secret Diary of Hendrik Groen, 83 1/4 Years Old by Peter De Smet Recommended by my book club. Who knew retirement homes could have such drama?
John of John by Douglas Stuart Picked this up while wandering through The Floating Bookshop in Oklahoma City’s Automobile Alley. Religion, small towns, and gay life. Sign me up.
🎬 On my screen
The Great British Baking Show: Collection 14 It’s that time of year again. Bring on the snickerdoodles.
The Leftovers An HBO psychological thriller/drama from the 2010’s involving the disappearance of millions of people on a random day in October. Rapture vibes, but there’s something deeper afoot.
🎧 In my ears
Deconstructing Horror with Ryan Does I recently discovered that if I squint my eyes and have the mute button handy, I can watch a scary movie or two. So I found a podcast that explores philosophical analysis, hidden theology, social commentary, and existential themes in horror cinema. Friday the 13th, here I come.
🎲 In my imagination
Playing the Choice of Games text adventure Day for Night by Josh LaBelle, from the World of Darkness universe (it’s October so, spooky times.)
Also Playing Crown Gambit, a narrative tactical game in which you guide three paladins down an ominous path, through a capital plagued by chaos and political unrest. There’s a card mechanic to this one, which I like.
Solo TTRPG of the month: The Altimer. The year is 2162, intelligent extra-terrestrial life has been discovered, and a new recruit arrives at the Global Interstellar Group to be trained as an astronaut. That trainee is you.
So far, I’ve died three times.
🧭 Out in the world
I recently visited Oklahoma City for a wedding, and October 9-11 I’ll be attending Theology Beer Camp in Kansas City. It’s nice that it’s just down the road.
✨ Little wonders
I have been ecstatic about the House Latte at Morning Fog here in Lawrence, Kansas. If you’re going to get one, you might as well get a cinnamon roll, too. And possibly a scone?
